Across Ireland’s hills and mountains, great expanses of native purple heather grow among the green grasses and sedges, covering the slopes in a tapestry of colour. Beneath wide skies, the landscape stretches for what seems forever, shaped by centuries of wind, rain and grazing.

These places have long been part of Ireland’s story, crossed by shepherds, and travellers for centuries, These hills have also played a part in Ireland’s struggle for freedom, providing shelter and concealment for those who fought during the War of Independence. Moving through the heather and rugged uplands, IRA volunteers used the landscape to hide from pursuing forces and move unseen between engagements.
