In Irish folklore, a ring of mushrooms appearing in the grass was said to mark a place where the Aos Sí, the fairy people, had danced the night prior. These rings were treated with great respect, for disturbing them was believed to invite misfortune.
Farmers were often reluctant to plough through fairy rings or disturb them in any way, so as not to draw the ire of the fairy people. On quiet nights, it was said that music, dancing and even the sound of fairy processions could be heard from these mysterious places.
To this day, fairy rings remain one of Ireland's most enduring pieces of folklore, a reminder that sometimes, the Otherworld is never very far away.
